My biggest criticism of McWhorter is that the book does not address the topic of spirituality at all. It is probably fair comment to say that most authors in the west shy away from discussing religion in their works. But spirituality in the context of a secular society need not exclusively focus on theology and religion. Ian Mitroff and Elizebeth Denton stated in their book on spirituality in corporate America, “Most executives defined spirituality in much the same way – not as religion, but as the basic desire to find purpose and meaning in one’s life”.
It is important to address spiritual intelligence especially when dealing with issues central to a student such as integrity, handling academic problems and stress, establishing goals, assessing priorities and realizing responsibilities. A high spiritual intelligence is the largest determining factor in realizing one’s true potential. Danah Zohar and Ian Marshall succinctly define the spiritual quotient (SQ) as “the intelligence to put our actions and our lives into a wider and richer meaning. It is the intelligence to judge whether ones actions or way of life is more meaningful than another’s is. SQ is the foundation required to make IQ and EQ function effectively. SQ is our highest intelligence”.
I believe that when somebody does something solely for God, and works hard at achieving his goal, then he or she is sure to succeed. In the case of a student, this happens when one has ‘inner principles’ that when combined and harnessed, make for an all rounded individual. The steps in handling academic problems as McWhorter suggests are all very rational and true, but are not accompanied by spiritual advice. Indeed, if one followed their spiritual voice, one would not experience academic problems in the first place.
Ary Ginanjar Agustian in his book The Islamic Guide to Developing ESQ says that a stereotypical image of the world and the Hereafter has developed in our society which has resulted in a polarization of the physical world and spirituality. So I can understand that McWhorter would have no incentive to include such material in her book, but I believe suggestions such as mine are timely in an age where young adults are observed to be more aggressive, depressed, and more prone to worry than previous generations.
